“This program makes you stronger, helps you maintain your weight, and is just overall amazing.”
STEVENS POINT, WI (OnFocus) – Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), aims to educate the community about the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with chronic lung disease. This year’s theme, “Breathe Easy, Live Freely,” honors individuals who struggle to overcome shortness of breath and the pulmonary professionals who work every day towards a path for better health.
Danielle Kundinger, a registered respiratory therapist with Aspirus Health, emphasizes the significance of pulmonary rehabilitation in managing chronic lung conditions. “Our pulmonary rehab program is designed to enhance lung function, alleviate symptoms, and improve overall quality of life for our patients,” she emphasizes.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), two in three participants report positive outcomes after engaging in a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
Cindy Jarman’s story epitomizes the transformative impact of pulmonary rehabilitation. Cindy’s rehabilitation journey began in 2017 following a heart attack. After receiving a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and undergoing a double lung transplant in 2023, Cindy continues to find solace and strength through the Aspirus pulmonary rehabilitation program.
“I highly recommend pulmonary rehab. This program makes you stronger, helps maintain weight, and you get to be around people who deal with the same issues you do,” beams Cindy. “It’s just a wonderful thing that they offer here,” she affirms. “I always leave feeling happy.”
In addition to pulmonary diseases, Danielle notes an increase in recovering COVID-19 long haulers. She emphasizes, “Regardless of what brings the patient to us, we strive to give them the physical, emotional, and educational support they need to manage their lung condition effectively.”
Through the staff’s support, structured exercises and educational sessions, patients like Cindy are empowered to reclaim their lives and enhance their well-being.
If you or a loved one suffers with a chronic lung disease, there is hope for rebuilding strength and enjoying a fuller, more active life through pulmonary rehabilitation.
Aspirus offers pulmonary rehabilitation programs at various locations. To explore options or initiate the referral process, consult with your primary care clinician or pulmonologist.
