MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Patricia Hetzel was recently honored with Aspirus Southeast Division’s Sunflower Award. Patricia is a laboratory assistant with Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital and was nominated for the award by a co-worker, who wrote:
Patricia is a wonderful person and co-worker; but in this specific instance, she showed so much compassion for a patient. There was a young patient in the Emergency Department who was very sick with cancer, among other things. She had been in and out of the hospital for treatments and had also been admitted multiple times. Patricia not only remembered who she was, but many details about her life. The patient began to get very emotional and began crying. Pattie was so encouraging, talked her through it, and kept telling her, “You got this.” Pattie got down to her level, rubbed her hand, and hugged her. The patient seemed to feel very comfortable with Patricia and seemed very appreciative for the kind words and hug. Since Pattie remembered her from past visits, she was able to converse with her about things she had already been through. It was so incredible how calming and compassionate Pattie was with this patient. It calmed the patient down, and Pattie was even able to get her to smile. When I discussed how awesome Patricia was with this patient to my co-workers, everybody immediately told me stories of how incredible she is to work with. Everyone I work with raves about how amazing her attention to detail is. She truly makes patients feel comfortable during times of stress and hardship, and words cannot express the level of gratitude and respect I have for her. Thank you for being so spectacular! We appreciate you!
The Sunflower Award is a recognition program for Aspirus support staff who demonstrate the Aspirus values of compassion, accountability, collaboration, foresight, and joy.
