My, what long teeth you have!
You already know that your rabbit, guinea pig, chinchilla, hamster or other small pet is an expert chewer.
Did you know that their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives? With teeth like that, it’s no surprise that dental disease is common with these little guys, but thankfully it’s often preventable if you know how to take care of them.
Hay Now
Grass hay is the ideal, high fiber material for healthy dental wear. Be sure to follow feeding recommendations on pellets since overfeeding can limit your pet’s interest in hay.
Chew On This
Providing ample materials to satisfy instinctual chewing behavior can help prevent dental overgrowth. Chews made with woven hay, untreated wood, apple sticks and other natural materials are great for helping keep your pet’s teeth healthy.
Keep in mind, most small pets will chew on almost anything, so it’s important to provide safe chew options. Rotating natural chews and providing an assortment can help prevent unhealthy, boredom-based behaviors.
