The WIA highlights and honors the development of groundbreaking and innovative ideas, and hopes to encourage an even greater environment of innovation by bringing innovators together from various business sectors from throughout the state.

Thirty companies and nonprofit organizations have been selected as finalists for the 2017 Wisconsin Innovation Awards. In total, 233 businesses, products and services from around the state were nominated, with finalists being determined by a panel of 23 statewide industry experts, and with nominations spanning all parts of Wisconsin and representing large, medium and small companies, startups, established businesses, and nearly all industries.

The winner will be announced at an award ceremony event on October 4, which will take place at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Madison.

Marshfield company PreventionGenetics was nominated by Lisa Johnson, the CEO of BioForward Wisconsin, and has been named one of the finalists in this year’s Wisconsin Innovations Award. As a company that represents the life sciences industry throughout the state, BioForward Wisconsin was eager to nominate PreventionGenetics for the award this year.

“We look at who we think are the innovative companies, and PreventionGenetics really does fit the profile of how the WIA defines creative innovation. Innovation is not just on the product; it can also be on services,” said Johnson. “For example, I love their DNA Banking. That service that they are providing, where you can bank your DNA for the future, can benefit future generations with genetic testing. There are not many companies out there that can do that.”

Johnson added that PreventionGenetics is a market leader in clinical DNA testing. Genetic testing has potential benefits whether the results are positive or negative for a gene mutation, helping to identify what is causing illness or life altering symptoms in a child or later on-set in an adult in order to seek treatment or management options. Furthermore, test results can relieve uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about managing their health care.

“I think it’s just a real credit to PreventionGenetics and what they are doing in Marshfield, being one of the leaders with Genetic Testing Kits. They fit the profile of the WIA and that’s why we nominated them,” said Johnson. “It’s very exciting to have them as a finalist. We think they are a shining example for the life sciences industry and using creative innovation.”

The voting has made it to the level of the “people” for final judging so PreventionGenetics is encouraging everyone to vote and help spread the word.
