REVEALED: These are the worst states for delivery driver accidents during Christmas
- Wyoming is the worst state for delivery driver accidents during Christmas, with 2.4 accidents per 100,000 residents in December between 2018 and 2022 – the highest rate in the U.S.
- New Mexico is the second most dangerous state for delivery driver accidents during Christmas, with 1.75 accidents per 100,000 residents in December between 2018 and 2022.
- Hawaii is the safest state for delivery drivers during Christmas, with zero recorded delivery driver accidents in December between 2018 and 2022.
Wyoming is officially the most dangerous state for delivery drivers during Christmas.
The study, conducted by Las Vegas Personal Injury Lawyers H&P Law, used the latest data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to analyze the number of delivery driver accidents each December between 2018 and 2022 in every state in America, to discover which state had the highest rate of delivery driver accidents per 100,000 residents during the Christmas period.
To determine which motor accidents in each state involved delivery drivers, the research focused on vehicles with a Motor Carrier Identification Number (MCID), which all vehicles involved in interstate (and sometimes intrastate) commerce must have by federal law.

Matthew Pfau, Partner at H&P Law, commented on the findings: “Delivery drivers are at an increased risk of road accidents during the rush and crush of the Christmas season, especially with millions of people ordering gifts via next-day delivery services, and drivers having to meet a certain quota of deliveries.
“It is vital that drivers prioritize safety while on the road, ensuring that they check ahead for weather conditions, and checking that vehicles are safe and roadworthy. It is especially important to check that brakes are working correctly, as these can be the difference between life and death on slippery roads. Drivers must also follow basic safety rules on the road – eyes on the road, no texting while driving, and don’t drive tired”.

Methodology:
- FARS data detailing traffic crashes for the years of 2018–2022 was sourced from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- The details of all vehicles involved in crashes were used to determine the number of delivery vehicles recorded as involved. Vehicles registered with a Motor Carrier Identification Number (MCID) were assumed to be delivery vehicles. All vehicles involved in interstate commerce are required by federal law to be registered with an MCID, and 39 states require this registration for intrastate commerce. More information can be found here.
- The states were analyzed by calculating the total number of delivery vehicles involved in the five-year period per 100,000 population. The states were then ranked from highest number of vehicles to lowest.
- The worst day in December for each state was calculated by identifying the day with the highest number of delivery vehicles involved over the five-year period.
