1 Mellen Granit Diggers
Mellen and the surrounding area has a long mining history, and there is even a special type of black granite from the hills around the city of Mellen, so it would make sense that the high school in the small town would carry the Granite Digger mascot.
9 Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts
Kaukauna has maybe the most mysterious origin of a mascot, as the mascot is, according to the Kaukauna Public Library, either from a sportswriter or a former coach. Story one comes from an article that referred to how the team were lighter and would trample Appleton. It didn’t help that Kaukauna wore all white for that game, and it was on Halloween. Story two relates to Harold “Red” Grange who was nicknamed the Galloping Ghost, and football coach at the time Bill Smith referred to his lighter and speeder running back with the same name. Since 1940 the school has had an actual horse and rider that deliver the game ball to the referee at home games.
1 Elkhart Lake-Glenbeaulah Resorters
Elkhart Lake near Sheboygan is home to many resorts and as the cities slogan says it is “A Legendary Wisconsin Getaway” so a mascot of a Resorter is a clear call to their industry. The elk as the actual visual embodiment of the mascot is also a nice touch.
8 Pius XI Popes
Pius XI Catholic High School was named in honor of the Pope at the time of the schools founding. So it would only make sense to use the mascot of the Popes for your school. The school does not use any papal imagery and has an unofficial mascot the “Sugar Bear” that attends sporting events and has for over 50 years.
