Police Standoff in Wisconsin Rapids Ends in Arrest After Shooting Incident
Wisconsin Rapids, WI (OnFocus – In the early hours of Tuesday, August 20th, 2024, officers from the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department (WRPD) responded to a domestic disturbance call that escalated into a dangerous pursuit and shooting.
The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. Shortly after, a deputy from the Portage County Sheriff’s Department located the suspect and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect refused to comply, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase along State Highway 54 toward Wisconsin Rapids. During the pursuit, the suspect fired multiple shots at deputies and officers.
The chase ended near the intersection of 8th Street and East Grand Avenue when the suspect’s vehicle was disabled. However, the suspect continued to fire at law enforcement, striking multiple squad cars before fleeing the scene on foot.
A short time later, the suspect was located with the assistance of a drone, hiding on a rooftop near 9th and Grape Street. The suspect again fired at officers from the roof, prompting law enforcement to return fire. The suspect was struck, taken into custody, and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident. Authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, though they are urging residents to avoid the active crime scenes as the investigation continues.
Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the incident, including the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department, Portage and Wood County Sheriff’s Departments, and police departments from Grand Rapids, Nekoosa, Stevens Point, and Marshfield. The Department of Criminal Investigation is handling the ongoing investigation.
