Spencer/Columbus Defeats Pittsville in Thriller

A back and forth affair saw the lead change hands twice in the final two minutes, with Spencer/Columbus prevailing for a 28-22 nonconference win in week 2.

The Rockets held a 14-6 halftime lead after scores from Mac Konieczny on a 34 yard pass from Devin Timmler and a Jack Hoeper 3 yard run.

“Pittsville is a good football team.  They fought back to put us down late.  They are a well-coached very classy program. Luther is one of the best football players in the area with out a doubt,” shared Spencer/Columbus Head Coach Jason Gorst.

Hoeper’s 1 yard run in the third quarter pushed the S/C lead to 20-6 before the Panthers fought back.

Jameson Krueger caught a 37 yard halfback option pass from Dawson Luther followed by a Dalton Darr 10 yard reception to give Pittsville a 22-20 lead with 1:44 left.

The Rockets then scored on their final drive of the game with Hoeper’s third touchdown run, this one for seven yards.

“We had to come up with plays in all 3 aspects of the game to pull out the win.  I am very proud of our resiliency and fight throughout the game.  Teddy Meyer had a couple of huge pics.  Our Defensive line of Sam Helgestad, Ryan Bernick and Davis Vinnedge had a stand out game,” said Gorst.  “Jack Hoeper ran the ball well behind a good performance by the offensive line.  Devlin made some clutch throws and Drew lang and Austyn Widmann made some clutch catches on the last drive.”
