Central Wisconsin Tornado Shelter Available if Warning Issued
SPENCER, WI (OnFocus) – With severe storms forecasted for tonight, Spencer Public Schools would like to remind the community that the Spencer Dome (300 School Street, Spencer, Wisconsin, 54479) will be open as a tornado safe shelter if needed.
The Spencer Dome, located on the K-12 campus in Spencer, Wisconsin, is a FEMA-certified safe room built to withstand extreme weather, including tornadoes. In addition to serving as a multipurpose athletic facility — with a competition gym, fitness center, and wrestling room — the Dome plays a critical role in protecting the community during emergencies.
Shelter Procedures for Tonight:
- Door 12 (north side of the Dome) will be opened if a tornado warning is issued.
- Spencer Police Department and/or Spencer Fire Department personnel will be present to assist.
- Upon arrival, community members should enter through Door 12 and proceed directly into the fitness center for shelter.
At the Safe Room Supervisor’s discretion, indoor pets may be allowed in the safe room if on a leash or caged, if it is determined there are no safety or capacity concerns. Service animals are allowed in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless the individual’s disability prevents using these devices or these devices interfere with the service animal’s safe, effective performance of tasks.
Pet and service animal needs, such as food, water, and cleaning supplies, are to be provided by the animal’s owner. The animal’s owner is responsible for the actions of the pet/service animal and the pet/service animal must be kept under the owner’s control at all times.
The Dome was constructed as part of a $5.9 million campus upgrade, with $2.9 million in FEMA grants supporting its safe room capabilities. It features a monolithic concrete dome structure — 170 feet in diameter and 34 feet tall — designed specifically for both daily use and emergency protection.
