Further Upgrades in the Works

The Spencer School District had been taking advantage of the summer months to provide upgrades to its facilities.

The district was one of several area schools to receive a $42,217 Safety Grant through the Department of Justice for the purpose of safety improvements. With the grant money, a shatter-proof film will be applied over the window entrances at the elementary and high school, and locks will be installed on classroom doors.

A main project will be moving the elementary school entryway to the south end. Visitors will enter a vestibule with a receiving window to improve security. “Right now our system isn’t the best in that we buzz somebody into the building and rely on them to walk into our office,” said Superintendent Mike Endreas.

The playground is now handicap accessible with more upgrades planned for the future. Second grade and middle school bathrooms were completely remodeled with new pipes and tiles. A new announcing booth was added to the football field thanks to collaboration between numerous groups.

With these improvements checked off, the district is looking to continue upgrading more of its facilities, such as a gymnasium and community fitness center. These will be discussed along with the possibility of a referendum during a special school board meeting Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m in the high school library.
