GILMAN – The Spencer softball team split a pair of games at the GT Slamfest on Saturday, beating Stratford 3-2 and losing to Thorp 11-1.
Spencer (8-11) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Stratford (6-8).
Shaelee Neitzel had a two-run single in the fourth inning to give the Rockets a 2-1 lead before Stratford tied the game in the sixth when Paige Kolbeck singled and eventually scored on a Spencer error.
Aryiah Schuh scored the winning run for the Rockets on an error with two outs in the seventh.
Tiffany Meinders struck out nine and walked two in a complete-game effort for Spencer.
Kolbeck and Jessamae Rice each had two hits for the Tigers.
Neitzel had an RBI in the first inning for Spencer’s only run against Thorp. The Cardinals went on to win in five innings via the 10-run rule.
“We had our ups and downs today, but I think there is still some greatness about to emerge from this group of talented young ladies,” Spencer coach Laschel Canfield said.
Spencer will finish its Cloverbelt Conference East Division schedule at Loyal on Tuesday.
Stratford’s other game at the tournament was not reported.
