ARPIN, WI (OnFocus) – The Friends of Powers Bluff will host an event that is both a celebration and a culmination. The Spring Gathering and Homecoming at Powers Bluff County Park – Skunk Hill – Tah-qua-kik marks decades of work to preserve, protect, and expand the park. It honors the history of those who came before, and it celebrates the many diverse groups that joined together in unity. They continue to work together to educate and to show how important this site is from an ecological, historic, and cultural perspective.
The Spring Gathering & Homecoming is set for Saturday, May 3, from 10 am until 3 pm at Powers Bluff County Park, which is also known by its historical name of Skunk Hill, and its older name of Tah-qua-kik. Fred Pidgeon and his wife Germaine have spent 24 years collecting photos and information about the community members of the hill. White Pigeon, Fred’s great grandfather, led citizens from the Mayetta Kansas Reservation to Skunk Hill in 1905. Fred’s grandfather, Wabmee (White Pigeon) served as a leader and protector of that community. He told a six-year old Fred that one day he would have to protect Skunk Hill.
Now, as the Friends of Powers Bluff celebrate the expansion of the park, with new multi-use and single-track bike trails, the top of the hill enjoys protection and recognition as the significant site that it is. Attendees can learn more at the Spring Gathering and Homecoming, which will feature spring wildflower walks with renowned botanist Dr. Robert Freckmann, 6 Native Nations Speakers, a forest ecology walk, bike fair, silent auction, kids’ crafts, and a traditional potlatch (gift giveaway).
For this event, all parking will be at 7073 County Road N, one mile west of Arpin. Shuttle buses will take visitors to the hilltop, or they may walk to the top. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs if possible. The event is free and open to the public, and cash donations will be accepted.
The Friends of Powers Bluff work with the Wood County Department of Parks and Forestry to help make this park a welcoming destination for gatherings and silent sports for generations to come.
