State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament Preview

THE MEET:  The 51st Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Individual Tennis Tournament will be held Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 14-16. The meet takes place at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and resume Friday at 9 a.m. and then Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The WIAA uses GoFan Ticketing for all digital and cashless tickets. Admission is $9 plus online fees for adults and students. All tickets must be redeemed on a mobile device. To purchase tickets, visit the WIAA website at:  https://www.wiaawi.org/Tickets.

10 a.m. –  Fifth-place Matches
11 a.m. – Third-place Matches
11:30 a.m. –  Championship Matches

BY THE NUMBERS:  There were 201 teams sponsoring girls tennis this fall with 133 in Division 1 and 68 in Division 2. The top four finishers in flight 1 and the top finisher in flight 2 in both singles and doubles play at sectionals qualify for the State Tournament in each division. Also added to the tournament field by the seeding committee will be a maximum of 16 additional singles players and doubles teams in Division 1 and eight singles players and doubles teams in Division 2 that were eliminated earlier in the Tournament Series.

LAST YEAR: Second-seeded Elizabeth Sobieski of Muskego outlasted top-seeded Autumn Bruno of Whitnall to win the Division 1 singles crown by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final. In Division 1 doubles play, Halle Rosentreter and Gwen Hammond of Wilmot captured gold as the #8 seed in the tournament. They downed third-seeded Hannah Cady and Anna Long of Arrowhead 7-5, 6-1 in the final. Top-seeded Baluck Deang of Edgewood won the Division 2 singles title for the second year in a row, defeating second-seeded Erika Curtin of Xavier 6-3, 7-5 in the championship match. The top-seeded tandem of Kala Siddalingaiah and Rebecca Daskal of University School of Milwaukee won the Division 2 doubles championship with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over seventh-seeded Kylie McCormick and Bella Taleon of Xavier. In the alternate season State Tournament held last spring for teams unable to compete in the fall, fourth-seeded Annalise Yang of Madison La Follette captured the gold medal in singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over second-seeded Lily Olson of Madison Memorial in the championship match. In doubles play, the second-seeded duo of Sophia Paape and Shelby Roth of Neenah claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over fourth-seeded Tristyn Lueck and Audrey Ochsner of De Pere in the final to earn the title.

DIVISION 1 SINGLES NOTES: Freshman Kaede Usui of Franklin is the top seed with a 30-0 record. Sophomore Carolyn Schaefer of Divine Savior Holy Angels has been issued the #2 seed with her 26-1 record this season after placing fifth last season. Freshman Parker Christensen of Elkhorn is the #3 seed with a 21-2 in her first prep season. Senior Zaya Iderzul of Badger is the #4 seed. She qualifies for the fourth time. She placed third last season after a runner-up finish in 2019. Iderzul advanced to the third round as a freshman in 2018.  The fifth seed was issued to senior Ava Dunsirn of Neenah, who was the top seed  in the alternate season State Tournament last spring, and she ultimately placed third. She enters play in the State Tournament with a 23-1 record this season. Dunsirn also qualified in 2019, which resulted in a loss in the first round. Sophomore Annalise Yang of Madison La Follette was the champion of the alternate season last spring as a freshman. This year, she receives the #6 seed with a 23-3 record. Sophomore Netra Somasundaram of Middleton qualifies for the second straight season after finishing fifth in the alternate season tourney in her freshman campaign. She is seeded seventh this year with a 27-4 mark. Freshman Naisha Nagpal of Verona is the #8 seed with a record of 30-4. The ninth seed, sophomore Olivia Minikel of Manitowoc Lincoln, placed third in the alternate season in the spring. She qualifies again this season sporting a 24-0 record.

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES NOTES: The sister tandem of Christina and Emily Pan of Muskego comprise the top-seeded duo in the bracket. Christina, a senior,  transitions to doubles after placing sixth in singles at last year’s State Tournament. She teams with Emily, a sophomore, to enter play this season with a 13-0 record. Juniors Hannah Cady and Jane Berglin of Arrowhead are seeded  #2 with a 27-3 record. Cady is a three-time qualifier. She finished runner-up at State last season with a different partner after finishing sixth in 2019 with yet a different partner. Senior Sophia Paape and junior Shelby Roth of Neenah were the alternate season doubles champions last spring. The tandem is seeded third in the bracket this year with a 26-1 record. In addition, Roth qualified with a different partner in 2019 and advanced to the second round. A pair of seniors team-up to form the #4 seed for Brookfield East. Maggie Krill will transition from singles after advancing to the third round at State last season. She joins Therese Raster, who advanced to the third round in doubles play last year with a different partner. The duo enters the tourney with an 18-3 record this year. The Franklin tandem of senior Madelyn Dziubek and senior Carly Lehman are the fifth seed with a 28-2 record. Dziubek qualified with a different partner the past two seasons, placing third last year and advancing to the third round in 2019. Lehman also qualified back in 2019 with a different partner. They advanced to the second round. Seniors Abby Ostermann and Jean Marie Lorentz of Kimberly return to the tournament as the #6 seed with a 26-3 record. The duo has qualified the past two seasons, placing fourth last year after falling in their first-round match in 2019. Senior Paige Plemel and sophomore Bryn Gonzales of Whitefish Bay are the seventh seed with a 27-6 record. Both qualified with different partners a year ago and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. The junior tandem of Zoe Larson and Carly O’Leary of Cedarburg are the eighth seed with a 23-2 mark. They qualified together last season and advanced to the third round. Larson also qualified and advanced to the third round with a different partner in 2019. Besides the Pan tandem, the only other duo with an undefeated mark heading into the State Tournament is the unseeded Brookfield East team of senior Maddie Radtke and freshman Jasmine Sun at 13-0.

DIVISION 2 SINGLES NOTES:  Sophomore Lily Olson of Edgewood was awarded the top seed in the bracket with an unblemished 18-0 mark this season. She placed runner-up in the alternate season State Tournament last spring playing for Madison Memorial. Junior Lauren Lindow of East Troy is the #2 seed after finishing fifth last year. The three-time qualifier advanced to the second round her freshman season in 2019. She enters play this week with a 29-2 mark on this season. Senior Emily Gauger of Big Foot/Williams Bay has been issued the third seed with a 28-5 record after placing third last season.  Freshman Aubry Jayne of University School of Milwaukee is seeded fourth with a 14-5 tally this season. The fifth seed is junior Maggie McGinnis of Xavier, who qualifies for the first time with a 22-1 record this year. Sophomore Jessica Jacobson of Catholic Memorial is also a first-time qualifier with her 21-10 record. She is the #6 seed. Junior Olivia Pethan of Fox Valley Lutheran returns to the tournament field for the second straight season. She is the #7 seed with an 18-3 record after advancing to the third round last year. Senior Natalie Cartwright of Brookfield Academy is the eighth seed with a 14-7 record.

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES NOTES:  Senior Rebecca Daskal and sophomore Isabel Werner of the University School of Milwaukee were awarded the top seed with a 21-7 record. Daskal is half the duo that captured the doubles championship last season. She also qualified in 2018 and 2019 and advanced to the second round on both those occasions. Werner qualified last season with a different partner, which resulted in a loss in the opening round. Junior Sophia Rondeau and Katie Metcalf of East Troy are seeded second with a 30-1 mark after placing fourth last year. They also gained valuable experience by qualifying in 2019 and falling in their first-round match. Seniors Jeslyn Singson and Courtney Sturm of Catholic Memorial are the third seed with a 16-10 record. Both have State experience. Singson qualified last season and advanced to the second round with a different partner. Sturm qualified with a different partner in 2019 and advanced to the third round. Senior JJ Krohn and junior Lexi Kass of Brookfield Academy are the fourth-seeded tandem with a 19-7 mark. Krohn qualified with a different partner last season, which resulted in a first-round loss. Seniors Ella Schroeder and Marissa Stolt of Pacelli return to State with an 18-1 record. The pair has qualified the past two seasons, advancing to the second round of play last year and falling in the opening round in 2019. Schroeder, four-time State qualifier, also qualified as a freshman in 2018. The #6 seed in the bracket is senior Evie Shepich and sophomore Teigan Petersilka of Regis with a 20-11 tally this season. Shepich has qualified for the fourth time. With a different partner she qualified as a freshman and finished sixth in 2019. Last year with a second different partner, she fell in the first round. Petersilka also qualified last year and advanced to the third round. Senior Natalie Udovich and freshman Sophia Torke of Kohler are seeded #7 with a 21-3 record. Udovich was a qualifier last season and advanced to the second round with a different partner. Sophomores Josie Rondestvedt and Bella Bauer of Altoona are seeded eighth with a 22-8 record.
