ATHENS – James Heeg and Caden Bruesewitz had top-20 finishes to help the Stratford boys cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Athens Invitational on Thursday.
Heeg placed 11th in 17:51.2 and Bruesewitz was 19th in 18:35.6 for the three area school’s best finishes in the boys race.
Stratford finished fifth with 134 points, Marshfield Columbus Catholic was eighth with 222, and Spencer took 13th with 317 points in the 14-team meet.
Bryce Fuerlinger finished 21st in 18:40.5 and Cole Noreen was 41st in 19:39.5 for the Dons.
Spencer was led by Ashton Ackman, who took 48th in 20:29.4.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption won the boys team title behind first-place runner Garrett Dolan (16:18.6) and second-place finisher Sean Dolan (16:42.8).
In the girls race team standings, Stratford finished seventh with 184 points, Spencer took eighth with 193, and Columbus Catholic finished 10th with 211 points.
Kaylee Wehrman of Spencer led area runners, placing 30th in 23:40.3.
Lydia Golbach of Stratford was 32nd (23:44.5) and Sarah Zuelke finished 33rd (23:52.7) for the Tigers.
Columbus Catholic’s top runner was Janelle Haupt, who took 38th in 24:48.7.
Haley Voermans-Dean of Tomahawk won the girls race in 20:23.4.
