STRATFORD – The Stratford girls basketball team stormed back from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Wausau Newman Catholic 40-35 in a Marawood Conference South Division game Tuesday night at Stratford High School.
The win puts the Tigers (3-1 overall) in a tie for first place in the Marawood South with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption at 2-0, knocking Newman (5-3, 2-1 Marawood South) out of the top spot.
Newman led 25-18 at halftime before the Tigers clamped down on their opponent, limiting the Cardinals to just 10 points in the second half.
Stratford made 16 of 25 free throws, while the Cardinals were only six of 11, giving the Tigers a big advantage that they need to pull out the win.
Breanna Ackley had 10 points, Blaire Lindner added nine,a nd Macie Schillinger had eight in a blaanced scoring attack for Stratford.
Stratford is off until next Tuesday, Dec. 11, when it plays at Marathon.
