OSSEO – The Stratford softball team held off a late rally by Osseo-Fairchild and beat the Thunder 5-3 in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Thursday.
The Tigers improve 7-11 and will play a D-3 regional semifinal at No. 1 seed Elk Mound (18-4) on Tuesday.
Stratford scored twice in the first inning and added single tallies in the second and third to open up a 4-0 lead.
The Thunder (6-11) chipped away, cutting Stratford’s lead to 4-3 after five innings. Stratford pitcher Maria Schoenfuss settled in after that, shutting down Osseo-Fairchild in the final two innings to preserve the win.
Stratford added a single run in the seventh inning to earn the two-run win.
Mariah Zawislan, Alexcis Gadke and Emily Meyer each had two hits, one run scored and one RBI for the Tigers.
Schoenfuss finished with four strikeouts and two walks, while limiting Osseo-Fairchild to just three hits.
