Stratford softball upsets Elk Mound in WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal

ELK MOUND – The Stratford softball team pulled off an upset of a No. 1 seed with a 4-2 victory over Elk Mound on Monday in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.

Mazie Nagel had an RBI single to score Jessamae Rice in the second inning, and Rice had a two-run double in the third to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Sydney Boeger walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to score Clare Bargender to push Stratford’s lead to 4-1.

Elk Mound (18-5) scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning before Stratford pitcher Kylah Wenzel got out of the jam to finish off the win.

Wenzel had one walk and scattered nine hits to earn the win for the Tigers.

No. 9 seed Stratford (8-11) moves on to a D-3 regional final at No. 5 Stanley-Boyd (8-12) on Thursday. Stanley-Boyd also pulled off an upset on Monday, beating No. 4 Durand 3-1.

Rice and Bargender each finished with three hits for Stratford.
