STRATFORD, WI (OnFocus) – At 6:04 a.m. this morning, the Stratford Fire Department was paged to a structure fire at a residence in the 205000 block of Rangeline Road in the Town of Day, Marathon County. The property is a single-family home with an attached garage. The structure was substantially damaged by the fire.
Firefighters found evidence of foul play and no homeowner could be located. They alerted Marathon County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a search of the burned structure revealed two deceased persons. Based on the suspicious nature of the fire and unknown cause of death, a criminal investigation has begun. Attempts to identify the victims and efforts to protect the scene from inclement weather are underway. Investigation will continue from there. The Sheriff’s Office is receiving assistance from Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation State Fire Marshals and the Marathon County District Attorney’s Office.
Once the victims have been identified and family members have had proper notification an updated media release will be provided. No other details of the circumstances of the fire will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the criminal investigation.
Assisting the Stratford Fire Department with extinguishing the fire and emergency medical response was the Edgar Fire Department, McMillan Fire Department, Mosinee Fire/EMS, Marshfield EMS. The Salvation Army is on scene for victim and first responder assistance.
