Study Reveals US Cities with the Cleanest and Dirtiest Hotel Rooms

Sticky floors and unmade beds? No thanks. Walking into a dirty hotel room is the fastest way to kill your vacation vibe.


To help travelers find a summer stay that sparkles, the research team at home cleaning company Home Spritz, analyzed over 10 million TripAdvisor reviews for around 10,000 hotels to find out which US cities have the cleanest hotel rooms, as well as those with the dirtiest accommodations.


The study revealed that Boston tops the list of US cities with the cleanest hotel rooms, with a cleanliness rating of 4.54. Known for its rich history and vibrant culture, Boston is a popular travel destination. Visitors can explore many attractions, such as the Freedom Trail and world-class museums while enjoying accommodation in top-rated hotels.


Second on the list is Minneapolis with a cleanliness rating of 4.44. TripAdvisor reviews highlight the clean environment across the city hotels, making Minneapolis a top choice for those seeking a tidy and hygienic place to stay.


Charleston ranks third with a 4.42 hotel hygiene rating. According to reviews, visitors appreciate the city’s clean hotel rooms, bathrooms, and other facilities, which contribute to a comfortable and hygienic stay. The presence of spotless linens, sanitized surfaces, and well-maintained amenities made them feel welcomed and cared for during their time in the city


Santa Fe takes the fourth spot with a rating of 4.40. The city not only offers historic landmarks, vibrant art galleries, and a rich cultural scene but also ensures clean hotels that satisfy visitors with their hygienic standards.


New York City rounds out the top five US cities with the cleanest hotel rooms, boasting a rating of 4.39. In TripAdvisor reviews, visitors frequently note that hotels in NYC are clean and maintain high standards of hygiene.


Chicago ranks sixth with a cleanliness rate of 4.33. Cleveland follows closely behind in seventh place with a rating of 4.32.


Rounding out the top ten are Seattle (4.28 cleanliness rating), Maui (4.27), and New Orleans (4.27), offering clean accommodations for travelers looking to enjoy their time in these vibrant destinations.


US cities with the dirtiest hotel rooms


Nationally, the most common bad reviews include complaints about bed bugs, dirty sheets, poor bathroom cleanliness, unpleasant odors, and a lack of toilet paper.


Kalaoa’s scenery is breathtaking, from majestic mountains to pristine waters, but a bad hotel experience can quickly taint your trip. According to Tripadvisor reviews, Kalaoa holds the unfortunate title of having the dirtiest hotels, with an average cleanliness score of a measly 2.62.

Returning from a delightful day at the beach, only to be greeted by a filthy room might be a nightmare come true for some tourists visiting Long Beach, known for its disappointing cleanliness score of 3.61.


Jacksonville and Oakland take third and fourth spots on the list with cleanliness scores of 3.62 and 3.60. Disgruntled reviewers have even reported finding used soap in the showers.


Sacramento rounds out the top five with a score of 3.66. In addition to the general uncleanliness in hallways and common areas found in different hotels, guests have also complained about the lack of basic amenities like hand soap, shampoo, and other toiletries.
