Suffering With Back Pain? This Trending Treatment Could Help

Global interest in red light therapy soars by 83% as experts reveal its potential for back pain management

Key Findings:

    • Google Trends data reveals worldwide searches for red light therapy have increased by 83% over the past 12 months
  • The treatment, developed by NASA for astronaut wound healing, is gaining traction for back pain management
  • Red light therapy expert reveals how this non-invasive approach could help those dealing with both acute and chronic back pain

Back pain can be in a league of its own. If you’re new to dealing with it or have been navigating flare-ups for years, you know how quickly it can leave you feeling completely out of action.

Red light therapy, backed by research and scientific evidence, shows promise for managing both acute and chronic back pain. And interest in the practice is growing, with searches for ‘Red light therapy’ having increased 83% worldwide over the past 12 months.

Scott Chaverri, Founder and CEO of Mito Red Light, has shared insights into why this trending treatment could be beneficial for those struggling with back pain.

“The surge in interest around red light therapy isn’t surprising,” explains Chaverri. “As more people seek non-invasive ways to manage back pain, they’re discovering that red light therapy, particularly near-infrared light, can penetrate deep into muscle and joint tissue to support natural recovery processes.”

What is Red Light Therapy?

It may sound a bit futuristic, and there’s a reason for that. Red light therapy’s medical benefits were initially discovered through NASA’s space research.

In 1993, while using LED lights for plant growth experiments, NASA scientists noticed an unexpected benefit – red LED wavelengths caused the researchers’ skin lesions to heal faster. Their discovery led NASA to further investigate the therapeutic potential of red light, expanding our understanding of its benefits beyond just wound healing.

Both red light therapy and near-infrared light (NIR) light therapy use specific wavelengths of light that target cells at a mitochondrial level. When tissues are stressed or injured, these wavelengths can help increase cellular energy (ATP) production, reduce oxidative stress, and decrease inflammation. The process can help promote healing, reduce pain, and support the body’s natural recovery mechanisms across multiple health conditions.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy focuses on cells, the foundational units of our health. Within each cell, mitochondria generate ATP, the energy required for cellular activities. And when cells produce enough ATP, they operate at their best.

This cellular health supports stronger tissues, organs, and overall body systems, leading to better overall health. Red light helps speed up a part of the ATP production process that often slows with age, effectively stimulating mitochondria to produce ATP more efficiently.

This process is particularly relevant for back pain sufferers, as the treatment can reach deep into tissue where discomfort often originates. Unlike traditional pain management approaches that often mask symptoms, red light therapy aims to address discomfort at its source.

How Might Red Light Benefit Back Pain?

Different wavelengths of red light can be helpful, but to reach deeper areas like muscle and bone, you’ll need near-infrared (NIR) light, which falls in the 800-900 nm range.

When it comes to easing muscle and joint pain, red light therapy works in two main ways. First, it gives cells a boost, and second, it tackles pain at its source, supporting healing and reducing inflammation right where it starts. Together, these benefits offer a gentle, drug-free approach to managing back pain, with zero side effects.

Beyond Back Pain: Additional Benefits

While many are turning to red light therapy for back pain, Chaverri points out that users often report additional benefits: “Many of our clients initially start using red light therapy for back pain but discover other benefits, such as improved sleep quality and post-exercise recovery. This has definitely contributed to its growing popularity.”

Scott Chaverri, Founder and CEO of Mito Red Light comments: “We’re seeing a big shift in how people approach pain management. The traditional route of masking pain with medication is being challenged by those seeking more sustainable solutions. Red light therapy represents a different approach entirely – one that works with the body’s natural processes instead of overriding them.

“What’s particularly exciting is that this isn’t just anecdotal evidence anymore. The science behind red light therapy is solid, backed by numerous studies showing its potential benefits for various types of pain and inflammation. The fact that it was developed by NASA for healing astronauts’ wounds speaks to its credibility.

“As we continue to gather more data and user experiences, we’re seeing that people aren’t just using it for back pain – they’re finding benefits for their overall wellness routine. This is particularly important because back pain often isn’t an isolated issue – it can affect sleep, mood, and overall quality of life. Having a treatment option that potentially addresses multiple aspects of wellness is invaluable in today’s health-conscious world.”
