Three-goal second period lifts Marshfield boys hockey past Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield boys hockey team blew open a tie game with a three-goal run in the second period and went on to defeat Wisconsin Rapids 5-3 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at the South Wood County Ice Arena.

Ryan Krueger scored twice in the first period for the Tigers and the game was tied 2-2 heading into the second period.

The Tigers (4-2 overall, 1-1 WVC) busted open the game with three unanswered goals in the second period.

Sawyer Schindler, Isaac Wellens and Nate Boson scored in a span of 4½ minutes for Marshfield.

Rapids scored once in the third period, but the Tigers were able to hold on as goalie A.J. Trierweiler made 16 saves in goal.

Rapids drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Valley.

Marshfield hosts Medford in a nonconference game Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Marshfield Youth Ice Arena.
