The study, by Hennessey Digital, compiled a list of 273 festive-related names and used the latest data from the Social Security Administration (SSA) to discover the top five most popular Christmas-themed baby boy and girl names in the US.

1). Scarlett

Scarlett is the most popular Christmas-inspired baby girl name in the US, with 6294 baby girls named Scarlett in 2023. Scarlett evokes the vibrant, cheerful red that we associate with the Christmas season, from the scarlet of berries on glowing green holly leaves to Santa’s red robe.

2). Nora

Nora is the second most popular Christmas-themed baby girl name in the US, with 5994 baby girls named Nora in 2023. Nora is a diminutive of Eleanor, which means ‘light’ or ‘torch’, evoking the light in the darkness that so characterizes the Christmas season, as we look with joy and hope to the coming of Christ into the world.

3). Avery

Meaning ‘ruler of elves’, Avery is third on the list of most popular Christmas-related baby girl names in the US in 2023. Evoking the magic of Christmas lore, which sees elves helping Santa in his workshop and bringing joy to millions of children around the world, Avery is a name that truly evokes festive wonder.

4). Abigail 

Abigail is fourth on the list of most popular Christmas-themed girl baby names, with 5670 baby girls named Abigail in the US in 2023. The name means ‘a father’s joy’, evoking the familial unity and peace that we celebrate at Christmas, as we come together to celebrate with loved ones.

5). Ivy 

Ivy rounds out the top 5 most popular Christmas-themed baby girl names, with 5059 baby girls named Ivy in the US in 2023.  Ivy is a beautiful plant that is an essential staple of the evergreen finery of the Christmas season, frequently wound into wreaths and other festive decorations, bringing a strong sense of festive beauty.

It is also the name of the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, evoking key Biblical and Christmas connotations.

3). Jack

Jack is third on the list of most popular Christmas-inspired baby boy names, with 8683 baby boys named Jack in 2023. Jack evokes the classic winter character of Jack Frost, capturing the cheery, exciting, and snowy atmosphere of the festive season.

Joseph rounds out the top 5 most popular Christmas-themed baby boy names in the US. Jesus’ foster father, Joseph, is a key figure in the nativity, making Joseph a wonderful, classic Christmas name that evokes the most important story of all: the birth of Jesus.

Methodology:

Data was gathered from the Social Security Administration’s records (as of March 3, 2024) for children born in 2023. A seed list of 273 Christmas-themed names was compiled from popular parenting websites, including Emma’s Diary, GoodTo, and Mumsnet. The number of babies with these names was then counted for male, female, and total births to provide the final ranking.
