Fitness experts at PTPioneer.com used Google search data to analyze workout preferences and find the most popular types of workouts in each U.S. state in 2024. The research also includes the number of gyms, their membership fees across each state, and the percentage of the population regularly exercising. The ranking is based on adjusting the number of Google searches in each state to its population size.

Colorado is leading the list with its strong preference for CrossFit. The state recorded nearly 850K searches for CrossFit workouts or studios this year. With nearly 400 gyms, Colorado has one of the highest percentages of residents participating in physical activity. The average membership fee for these gyms is $57 US dollars.
Vermont follows in second, where residents prefer cycling. 82% of adults who do some type of physical activity or exercise searched for workouts or exercises over 90K times. The state has only 33 gyms, which is the lowest on the list, and higher gym membership fees, averaging $79.
Massachusetts comes in third, mirroring Vermont with its preference for cycling. The state citizens searched for cycling workouts or exercises 895K times this year. With 79% of residents exercising outside their regular jobs, Massachusetts has a higher number of gyms, with a total of 412, and a relatively higher gym membership fee of $95.
Hawaii ranks fourth, having Zumba as its preferred workout. The state recorded 182K searches, and 80% of its residents actively engage in exercise. There are 50 gyms to choose from in Hawaii, and the cost of gym memberships is around $50, which is reasonable when compared to other states.
Utah ranks fifth with 405K searches, showing a preference for running. 83% of residents who engage in physical activity have access to 165 gyms, and the membership fee is only $35, which is one of the lowest.
Nevada comes sixth, with a preference for Pilates. The state residents searched pilates-related exercises or workout plans over 375K times this year. Despite having a higher number of gyms, Nevada offers the lowest gym membership fees among the top ten states, priced at $25.
Washington ranks seventh in terms of workout preferences, with yoga being the most popular choice. Residents of Washington searched for yoga exercises or classes more than 909K times this year. The exercise participation rate in Washington is 82%, and there are 467 gyms to choose from, with a membership fee of $78.
Delaware ranks eighth in terms of popularity for running among its residents. The state has recorded 116K searches and has the lowest exercise participation rate at 73%. There are 60 gyms available in Delaware, with an average gym membership cost of $75.
New York ranks ninth on the list, with its residents showing a strong interest in cycling. They have searched for cycling exercises over 2 million times this year. The state also has the highest gym membership fee of $113 and a total of 615 gyms, which is the highest among the top ten cities.
Rounding out the top ten is Rhode Island, which also favors cycling. The state recorded 127K searches and has a 76% exercise participation rate. Gym memberships in Rhode Island average $68, offering 76 available gyms to choose from.
