Pets Perish in Friday House Fire
(OnFocus) Vesper Fire Department responded to a report of a homeowner who returned home to find it full of smoke on Friday afternoon.
The department was dispatched at 4:29 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20. to 3915 Elm Road, Town of Seneca, Wood County, according to a press release. On arrival, they found a 30′ x 50′ 3-story loft style log exterior home with heavy smoke throughout and an extensive self-vented fire in the east end of the lower level.
Vesper firefighters were assisted by Wisconsin Rapids, Rudolph, Port Edwards, Nekoosa, Pittsville, and Arpin fire departments. Additional assistance was provided by United Ambulance, Wood County Central Rapid Intervention Team, Wood County Fire Investigation Task Force, Wood County Red Cross, Doine Excavating, Kwik-Trip, and Wood County Sheriffs, Highway, and Dispatch Departments.
Mutual aid units were released from the fire between 7 and 8 p.m. but were recalled at 10:50 p.m. for a flare-up. Vesper Fire units cleared the scene at 03:09 a.m. on Dec. 21.
Investigators determined that the accidental fire started in a lower level bedroom and may have been caused by electronic devices. Many personal belongings were salvaged from the home, but numerous pets died in the fire. The structure, owned by Todd and Jan Ketter, was a total loss, but there were no firefighter or occupant injuries.
