Uncover the True Price of Weddings in the U.S.

Weddings are a unique milestone in a couple’s shared life journey. However, the cost of this special celebration has risen substantially, with the national average now reaching $35,000.

Factors such as guest count, wedding season, and destination choices impact the overall expense.

In some states, you may face considerably higher costs; in others (like Utah), you may enjoy a wedding at about half the national average price.

It’s also worth considering that neighboring states could offer a more affordable option to celebrate your special day.

The Evolving Landscape of Marriage Trends

We find that as of 2023, there are approximately 62.18 million married couples in the United States. This figure underscores the continued prominence of marriage as a core social institution despite shifting societal norms.

One of the most notable changes is the increase in the average age for first marriages. Reviewing data from the United States Census Bureau, we find that currently, men tend to marry around the age of 30, while women typically marry at 29.

This marks a considerable rise from 1970 when the median age for the first marriage was 23 for men and 20 for women.

Factors contributing to the marriage delay include:

  • Financial stability
  • Educational and career priorities
  • Cohabitation trends
  • Societal shifts

Breaking Down Wedding Costs

According to data from a 2023 survey of 10,000 couples by The Knot, the national average cost for a wedding ceremony and reception in the United States reached $35,000. This represents a 16% increase from 2022.

Breakdown of major wedding expenses:

  • Venue: $12,800
  • Engagement Ring: $5,500
  • Live band: $4,300
  • Photographer: $2,900
  • Alcohol/drinks: $2,800

Factors Influencing Wedding Costs

Several factors can influence the total cost of a wedding, making it important for couples to plan carefully.

The final price of your wedding will vary based on the number of guests, vendors, overall theme/style, venue, and location.

Guest Count

More guests lead to higher catering costs, including food, drinks, and service staff, as well as increased rental fees for tables, chairs, and linens. Additional guests may also require a larger venue, driving up rental costs.

While certain expenses, such as photography and entertainment, remain fixed, a larger guest list generally results in a higher overall wedding cost.

Wedding Seasons

Wedding costs vary based on the season. Peak season, from July to September, has higher demand and costs, averaging $35,600.

Off-peak season, from October to December, is slightly cheaper, averaging $34,700, with lower demand and more flexibility for couples to find affordable venues and vendors.

Destination Weddings

Our research of the data provided by Destination Wedding Global Market Report 2024 reveals that destination weddings continue to rise in popularity, with the average cost in 2023 reaching $42,000.

Couples from the U.S. spent a total of $27.64 billion on global destination weddings in 2023. Social media has played a significant role in this trend.

Couples seek inspiration from influencers and share their wedding experiences on social media platforms.

Extravagant Weddings

The most expensive wedding ever recorded took place in 2016, at an astounding $1 billion.

This opulent celebration featured lavish details, including a custom beaded gown valued at $25,000 and a towering 9-foot-tall wedding cake.

Honeymoon Expenses

In 2023, the average cost of a honeymoon was $5,700, which is typically in addition to the costs of the wedding ceremony and reception.

When combined with the national average wedding cost of $35,000, the total expenditure for both the wedding and honeymoon amounts to approximately $40,700.

Wedding Cost in Your State

While the national average wedding cost provides a general estimate, actual expenses vary significantly depending on location.

Each state has its pricing trends, which are influenced by factors such as demand, venue availability, and regional economic conditions.
