(OnFocus) UW-Stevens Point will extend spring break one week in response to “increased uncertainties” regarding the spread of coronavirus.

In a letter to students, faculty and staff, Chancellor Bernie Patterson stated that classes would resume March 30 but in-person classes would be hosted by alternative methods to be communicated to students by email. The measure applies to UWSP’s satellite campuses in Marshfield and Wausau, and field stations.

No face-to-face classes will be held until further notice, the letter stated.

“Our top priority continues to be protecting the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff. This includes taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to our campuses,” Patterson said. “The goal of the two-week break is to give faculty additional time to develop alternative delivery methods for their classes, which may be needed for the remainder of the spring semester.”

Students are asked to take all of their instructional materials, essential personal items, and prescription medications with them when they leave for spring break, which will take place March 14-29.

“Students are strongly encouraged to return to their permanent residence after spring break until further notice,” the letter stated. “This will assist with social distancing in halls where students live close together and share facilities. Those who have no other housing options or no access to technology needed for coursework may return to residence halls.”

University sponsored travel is cancelled except NCAA Athletics until April 15. Any event with more than 50 people in attendance at campus facilities is cancelled from March 15-April 15. This applies to the three UW-Stevens Point campuses, Treehaven, Central Wisconsin Environmental Station and Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility.

Information on how to get ticket refunds will be provided.

The university remains open and employees will continue to come to work.

“We strongly discourage any unnecessary personal travel. Please be aware that if you do choose to travel you may be advised to self-quarantine at home for 14 days prior to returning to campus,” Patterson said. “Students should contact the Dean of Students office and employees should contact their supervisor if they self-quarantine.”
