(OnFocus) UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson has announced he will retire in December after 10 years in the position.

Patterson stepped into the chancellor role in July 2010 and previously spent more than 40 years in higher education.

His career includes serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Oklahoma City University from 2002-2010, dean at Georgia College & State University, and assistant dean at Valdosta State University in Georgia.

As chancellor, Patterson oversaw investments in the campus including a new Chemistry Biology Building which opened in 2018, and a complete renovation of DeBot Dining Center and five residence halls.

In 2012, he also commissioned a wooden replica of the cupola atop Old Main which has since been a fixture at commencement ceremonies and the fall convocation for new students.

Administration attracted a substantial amount of criticism in 2018 after proposing the elimination of 13 programs to respond to a projected $4.5 million deficit over two years, plans which were later scrapped.

In a letter to students, faculty, and staff, Patterson said, “The face of the university has changed over the last decade, as has higher education in general. The addition of our campuses in Wausau and Marshfield demonstrate how universities are in an almost constant state of change. What will not change is my love for this university and the respect I have for your dedication to student success. The next years will be challenging for all universities, but with the momentum and enthusiasm we have at UW-Stevens Point, I’m confident this university will continue to thrive.”

“Over the past decade and in a time of considerable challenges, Bernie has shown an unwavering commitment to UW-Stevens Point’s core mission of helping students succeed,” said University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross in a statement. “It is highlighted by his leadership of UW-Stevens Point’s first-ever comprehensive capital campaign, which raised $41.6 million in six years, exceeding its $30 million goal.”

The University of Wisconsin System will begin the search for Patterson’s successor.

“Chancellor Patterson has been a strong advocate for UW-Stevens Point, leading record-breaking fundraising efforts and being relentless in efforts to bring stability in the face of enrollment challenges,” said UW System Regent President Andrew S. Petersen. “We are pleased the new indicators show positive trends for UW-Stevens Point and believe the next leader will find UW-Stevens Point has a strong foundation and a bright future.”
