Marshfield (OnFocus)- The University of Stevens Point’s Diversity & College Access organization is hosting a Zoom celebration on June 19th.
The virtual event will feature a special guest speaker Chris Norfleet, a community activist, and Wausau mayoral candidate.
The event will take place from 2 PM to 3 PM on the historical day of Juneteenth, highlighting freedom for the last enslaved African American.
Juneteenth is a holiday also known as Freedom Day, Cel-Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day.
The celebration commemorates June 19th, 1865 when Galveston, Texas was ordered by Union General Gordon Granger to free all previously enslaved people in Texas, the last state where slavery was legal.
