Games like this can be a bit unnerving as Antigo came off their first historical GNC win on Tuesday when they defeated Medford 3-2 home at Listle field. We just came off our worst performance of the year. All the pressure is on the Pines boys as Antigo is on an adrenaline high point and we were sitting at a low point in our season. As coaches our job is to lift them up, dust them off and focus them at the task at hand. We decided to make some moves to attempt to put boys in positions that will make them successful while strengthening the team. We came out firing and possession was dominated by us earning 12 corner kicks. At the 10 minute mark we did just that earning a corner kick. AJ Muench drove the ball into box on a perfectly executed corner. Sweeper Cody Vojta raced into the box from the other side of the field finding the ball and the back of the net 1-0 Northland Pines. Much like many games this season the boys let of the gas a bit and a booted ball and a great deal of help from the wind caused Senior goalie Jacob Nampel to miss judge the ball and it got behind him and a hustling red robin player tapped it in the back of the net. We need to prevent this and continue to pour it on in games. This lit a fire under the boys and they pressured Antigo the rest of the half and 25 minutes into the half a perfectly passed ball from Junior Anthony Gaetano out the ball out for the keeper and striker Mason Jahnke to race down and Mason beat the keeper tapping it behind and dribbling it into the net. We continued to win corners and the last minute of half another perfectly driven ball from AJ Muench found the end of Cody Vojta and Pines goes into half with a 3-1 lead. This Gabe us the opportunity to get underclassman Varsity playing time to hopefully deepen our bench during playoffs. Our possession domination continued and an angled ball found AJ Muench coming across the field and entering the right side of Antigo’s box, where a Red Robin decided to wraps his arms around AJ to take a ride on his back dragging him down, with AJ earning a PK. Cody Vojta took the PK in which the goalie made an outstretch save, but a heads up play by Cody attacking the net drove the rebound in the back of the net, but an inadvertent whistle called for a conference and the way our luck has been this season concerned the team. Antigo’s coach and I were called over to hear what the refs decision was and it was determined a rekick. Cody ripped it in the right corner to complete his hatrick, Pines 4-1. 11 minutes just under the 75 mark Charlie Johnson had his first varsity point attacking the right side of the field playing a beautiful right to left cross and AJ Muench crash the net tapping the ball in completing his third point of the game. Northland Pines 5 Antigo 1. Overall our play was better. We learned somethings about our team and based on discussions the night before, the coaches decided to run a deeper bench and look to sub earlier so we can try and keep players fresh. Our hopes are to go deeper and maybe we can get complete games from the whole team as we enter the late games of the season.
