Cyclones sweep St. Louis to extend winning streak to eight

(Wausau, WI) – Wausau took on the St. Louis Jr. Blues over the weekend in Missouri in a Central Division match up. Wausau won 5-3 on Friday night and won 4-1 Saturday evening. The two victories move the Cyclones record to 10-1-0-0, which keeps the team in 1st place in the Central Division and moves their winning streak to eight.

Friday night, Wausau got on the scoreboard at 10:03 of the 1st period when Brandon Piwko scored his 3rd of the season. St. Louis tie the game just two minutes later and then take a 2-1 lead after a goal from St. Louis forward Joseph LoPicco. St. Louis took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Jr. Blues would extend their lead less than one minute into the 2nd period. Wausau made it a one goal game at 5:22 after John Kriz scored his 4th goal of the season, which was assisted by Connor Dvorak. Truman Zerse then tied the game at three 10 minutes after a goal from Truman Zerse.

Wausau and St. Louis headed into the final 20 minutes deadlocked at three and the game would remain that way until 16:29. That is when forward Brady Knutson provided the game winning goal after an assist from Jake Garrow and Frank Goodman. Connor Dvorak added an empty net goal to give Wausau the 5-3 win. Goalie Tanner Bonjernoor picked up the win in net for Wausau after stopping 20 of 23 shots.

Saturday night’s game got off to a bit of a slow start as the first 30 minutes were scoreless. Wausau broke the seal when team leading scorer Jake Garrow netted his 10th of the season. St. Louis tied the game at one late in the 2nd period, which kept the teams tied after 40 minutes. The Cyclones went on to dominate the 3rd period by getting 15 shots on net and scoring three goals on those shots. The goals came from Truman Zerse and a pair from Jake Garrow, which gave him his 2nd hat trick on the season. Dereck Namlick picked up the win for Wausau after stopping 31 or 32 shots.
