Wisconsin Rapids (OnFocus)  – Wausau East’s Erek Ross is headed to the WIAA State Cross Country Meet, and  we caught up with East Head Cross Country Coach, Tim Olson, to get his thoughts on the trip to state.

1.  What have been the keys for your athlete and team’s successful journey to state?
This is Erek’s first season of cross country. He has 1 season of experience racing in high school track from last year but he is a relative newcomer to CC. he decided he wanted to try and be a 2 sport athlete this fall and has split time between soccer and CC, with soccer being his primary sport. Eric has continued to improve and race better each week as he learns the subtleties of running a 5k at this level.
2. How are you approaching practice this week as you prepare for the state meet?
We have a routine that we follow for the last 3 weeks of the season that we have developed during my time at East. It has served us well and we have followed it as well as we have been able to this year.
3.  How has fan support been important for your team’s runners this year?
We have a great group of parents that travel to all of the away meets and help out at the home meets. Along with a small group of faithful friends they have done a great job keeping the excitement level high at our meets.
4. What do you see as the keys to be successful at The Ridges on Saturday?
I think we will look at it as a success no matter how the race goes, the goal was to make it to the state meet and he has met that goal. I know Erek would really like to run a PR on Saturday so he will have to get out into his race, stay relaxed through the first half of the race and then work to stay even or move up on the field over the second half with a strong last 400-600 meters in order to do that. He is certainly capable of it, especially with some rested legs that haven’t played a soccer game for a week.
