UPDATE: Wausau Police Respond to Shooting Incident

On Thursday around 8:45 a.m., Wausau Police Department responded to a shooting which occurred near Pine Grove Cemetery in southeast Wausau. Multiple people were reportedly injured.

The suspect was arrested shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Update 10:20:

The Wausau Police Department stated that one person was taken into custody near the scene and there are several victims. Conditions of those victims are not being released.

All local law enforcement is dedicating resources to the incident and the department is actively investigating with the help of other agencies. There is believed to be no active threat to the community based on the assessment of the scene.

The department asks for public patience on non-emergency calls for service. More information will be provided by 12:30 p.m. today.

Update 12:20:

Wausau Police say a fire on Fullmer Street in Schofield this morning is connected to the shootings at the Pine Grove Cemetery. A press conference will be held at 2 p.m.

Update 2:15 p.m.

There were three victims of a shooting that took place in Wausau this morning. At 8:30 a.m., Wausau Police responded to Pine Grove Cemetery and discovered three victims.

One victim was found dead at the scene and two others were transported to Wausau Aspirus Hospital for treatment. Officials declined to comment on the condition of those two victims at this time. The victims were employees of the cemetery or else related to an employee.

Callers reported that a possible suspect was fleeing to the east side of the cemetery. Officers and deputies arrived and establish a perimeter. The suspect was quickly located and taken into custody without further incident.

In a press conference, the Wausau Chief of Police revealed that the male suspect is a Schofield and Fullmer Street resident and is a former employee of the cemetery. He will make an initial appearance tomorrow in Marathon County Court.

There was only one shooter, who used a handgun which was found and recovered in the area of the cemetery.

At 8:14 a.m., Everest Metro Police responded to a fire on Fullmer Street at an apartment complex. The two incidents were stated to be connected and the fire is being treated as suspicious. While on scene, there was a report of a gas leak in a nearby building. Precautionary measures were taken and residents of the apartment complexes were evacuated.

Once that scene is secure, Everest Metro Police with work with Wausau Police Department and the Marathon County District Attorney’s office to obtain search warrants. Those will be executed yet today.

The public is asked to stay away from the scene and to contact either department, or Crime Stoppers, with any info that may be helpful to the case.
