(OnFocus) An officer-involved shooting in Wausau on Thursday resulted in the death of the suspect.

Police advised the public shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 16 to avoid N. 12th Ave at Arctic Lane as it responded to a report of a subject attempting to steal vehicles.

In a statement released Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said law enforcement confronted the individual, who fired at officers and a citizen’s occupied vehicle.

Law enforcement returned fire and the subject fell to the ground and remained armed. The individual was uncooperative to continued orders from officers and pointed the firearm at them. Law enforcement fired again at the suspect, who succumbed to injuries at the scene.

Video and audio recordings were recovered from the scene, including from the public. Members of the public who have recordings of the incident are asked to call DCI at 608-266-1671 so investigators can review the footage.

No law enforcement personnel or other individuals were injured during the incident.
Per department policy, involved officers from Wausau Police Department and Marathon County Sheriff’s Office were placed on administrative leave.

The DCI is assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Wisconsin State Patrol, Marathon County Medical Examiner, and DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services.

DCI is continuing to review evidence and will turn over investigative reports to the Marathon County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.

No other details were provided.
