Wisconsin Rapids (OnFocus) – Football is often a game of momentum, and in game filled with momentum swings, the VFA matchup between Wausau West and Wisconsin Rapids had plenty of drama.
With 17 second left, West’s Colton Guerink broke a 14-14 tie when he scored on a two yard plunge to give West a 21-14 lead and the win.
Geurink rushed 22 times for 188 yards in the game.
West took a 14-0 lead into halftime with Colton Guerink scoring on a 7 yard run and Garrett Richardt’s 20 yard touchdown toss.
The Warriors held their 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter before the Rapids’ running game started to wear the Warriors down.
Leo Brostowitz did the most of the damage for Rapids on the ground, collecting 63 yards on 20 carries. It was the Raiders’ passing game, however, that brought Rapids to life and began their comeback. Caden Sengbusch connected with Erik Haupt across the middle for a 60 yard strike that saw the speedy Haupt race through the Warriors’ secondary. Trailing 14-6, Rapids was energized, and it showed.
On the Warriors’ next possession, it was time for the Rapids defense to come up with a big stop, and after starting out their drive with momentum building, West looked to go deep.
Raider defensive back Jackson Schooley picked off a Richardt pass deep in Rapids’ territory and returned the interception across midfield, giving the Raiders a short field to work with.
Rapids capitalized.
With 2:48 left in the game, Brostowitz scored from three yards out to pull the Raiders within two. Brostowitz scored the two point conversion to tie the game at 14, setting up the Warriors’ game-winning drive.
Sengbusch was 3 of 5 through the air, for 109 yards.
Keegan Christy led the Raiders on defense with 10 tackles.
Dylan Lisitza punted three times for Rapids, averaging 39 yards a kick.
