WIAA Conducts First State Girls Wrestling Tournament

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Champions were crowned in 12 weight classes at the first-ever State Girls Individual Wrestling Tournament Saturday at the La Crosse Center.

The 12 individual champions represent 12 different school programs. Freshman Brooke Corrigan of De Pere won the title in the 100-pound weight class with a 7-5 decision over senior Karina Torres of Kenosha Indian Trail. At 107, junior Koressa Allgeyer of Marinette won with a 16-6 major decision over sophomore Sophia Wagner of Florence/Niagara.

Junior Bopasoreya Quintana of Sun Prairie captured the championship at 114 with a fall at 1:00 over sophomore Mya Delleree of Ozaukee. Junior Caitlyn Kelley of Florence/Niagara was crowned champion at 120 with a 10-0 major decision over freshman Hailey Berg of Bonduel.

Senior Sofia Brynman-Metcalf of Jefferson is one of four wrestlers to roll through their weight classes with all their victories in the tournament coming via the pin. She won the title at 126 by defeating junior Emma Gruenhagen of Boyceville by fall in 2:40. Junior Kylie Rule of Mineral Point earned the 132 title with a 9-0 major decision over freshman Madalyn Sokolski in the championship bout.

Senior Marisa Roth of Brookfield Central breezed through the 138 bracket with all four victories in the tournament coming by pin. She downed sophomore Sophia Galoff of Brillion by fall at 1:28 to secure her position at the top of the awards podium. Freshman Hallie Krueger of New London worked overtime to earn the title at 145. She defeated freshman Chloe LaRue of Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern by tiebreaker criteria, 5-3.

At 152, junior Alexandra Hofrichter of Antigo advanced through the bracket with pins in all four of her matches in the tournament, including a fall in 4:13 over freshman Isabelle Olesen of Oak Creek in the championship match. Freshman Cyriana Reinwald of Horicon won each of her five matches in the tournament by fall, including a pin at 5:31 over sophomore Sophia Bassino of Sun Prairie in her championship match at 165.

Freshman Lyndsey Stark of Spring Valley/Elmwood captured the crown at 185 with a fall over senior Brindelyn Eternicka of Merrill in 1:02. Senior Kaylie Upson of Phillips recorded pins in all three of her matches to win the title at 235, including a fall at 1:20 over junior Cambree Lokken of Eau Claire North in the title bout.

The first State Girls Wrestling Tournament also launched the WIAA’s year-long celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of Title IX legislation. A complimentary commemorative program is available at all State Tournaments throughout the year, and participants in all girls’ State Tournaments this year will receive a commemorative bag tag. In addition, recognition of the campaign will be promoted on tournament signage, t-shirt giveaways, stories and facts on the WIAA website and social media platforms.
