WIAA releases 2019 boys basketball playoff brackets

The WIAA released its brackets for the upcoming boys basketball playoffs.

Play begins with regional quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Regional semifinals will be Friday, March 1, and regional finals will be played on Saturday, March 2.

Sectionals are set for Thursday, March 7, and Saturday, March 9, with sectional champions qualifying for the 2019 WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on March 14-16.

Here is a look at what teams in the area face:

Division 1
In Sectional 1, the Marshfield Tigers (14-6, 9-2 WVC) are the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Oshkosh West (8-12, 6-10 FVA) on Friday, March 1. The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 3 Hudson (15-3, 8-2 Big Rivers) and No. 14 Superior (10-7, 5-1 Lake Superior (Minn.)) in a regional final on March 2.

Wisconsin Rapids (4-16, 2-9 WVC) is the No. 16 seed and will host No. 17 Wausau West (2-18, 0-11 WVC) on Tuesday, February 26. The winner will play No. 1 seed Kimberly on Friday, March 1.

Stevens Point (12-7, 8-2 WVC) is the No. 9 seed and will travel to Appleton to take on the No. 8 seed Appleton East (10-10, 7-9 FVA) on March 1. The winner of this game will most likely take on the No. 1 seed Kimberly (18-2, 14-2 FVA), should it survive against the winner of Wisconsin Rapids and Wausau West.

Division 2
Medford (8-12, 6-5 Great Northern) is the No. 8 seed in Sectional 1 and will No. 9 Lakeland Union (10-10, 6-6 Great Northern) on Tuesday, February 26, in a regional quarterfinal. The winner will face No. 1 seed Merrill (16-4, 8-2 WVC) on March 1 in a regional semifinal.

Mosinee (15-4, 11-0 Great Northern) is the No. 4 seed and will host the winner of Hortonville (9-10, 7-9 FVA) and Fox Valley Lutheran (3-17, 3-13 North Eastern) on Friday, March 1, in a regional semifinal.

Division 3
The Stratford Tigers (19-0, 15-0 Marawood South) are the No. 1 seed in the bottom half of the Sectional 1 bracket and will host the winner of No. 8 Adams-Friendship (6-11, 3-5 South Central) and No. 9 Viroqua (6-13, 4-6 Coulee) in a regional semifinal game on March 1.

Division 4
A number of area teams are in the same Division 4 Sectional 2 bracket.

No. 7 Colby (6-13, 6-9 Cloverbelt East) will host No. 10 Abbotsford (3-15, 3-11 Marawood North) in a regional quarterfinal Feb. 26, with the the winner playing at No. 2 Marathon (15-4, 11-3 Marawood South) in a regional semifinal March 1.

Stevens Point Pacelli (10-9, 7-3 CWC-South) is the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Westfield (3-17, 1-8 South Central) on Feb. 26. Neillsville (14-4, 11-2 Cloverbelt East) is the No. 3 seed and will host the winner of the Pacelli/Westfield game on March 1.

The Spencer Rockets (7-12, 6-9 Cloverbelt East) are the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Necedah (6-12, 4-8 Scenic Bluffs) on February 26. Auburndale (17-3, 12-2 Marawood South) gets the No. 1 seed in the bracket for the second year in a row, and they will host the winner of the Spencer/Necedah game on March 1. Should the Apaches win that one, they would also host a regional final on March 2.

Division 5
In Sectional 2, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (4-16, 4-11 Marawood South) is the No. 14 seed and will face No. 3 Wild Rose (14-5, 7-4 CWC South) in the first round. Port Edwards (10-10, 5-5 CWC South) is the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Newman Catholic (6-15, 3-12 Marawood South) in a regional quarterfinal. The winner of these two games will face each other in a regional semifinal March 1.

Edgar (13-6, 8-6 Marawood South) is the No. 4 seed and play at home against No. 13 Gresham (6-13, 5-5 CWC North) in a regional quarterfinal. The winner of this game will face either No. 5 seed Rosholt (10-8, 6-5 CWC South) or No. 12 Northland Lutheran (8-10, 6-5 CWC North) in the regional semifinals.

Almond-Bancroft (16-3, 8-1 CWC South) is the No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 Tigerton (4-15, 0-11 CWC North) in the first round. Pittsville (9-9, 3-7 CWC South) is the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 Marion (9-11, 5-5 CWC North) in the first round. The winners will play in a regional semifinal March 1.

Columbus Catholic (19-1, 15-0 Cloverbelt East) earns the No. 1 seed and will host No. 16 Tri-County (1-19, 0-11 CWC South) in a regional quarterfinal. No. 9 Loyal (9-11, 9-6 Cloverbelt East) plays at No. 8 Wisconsin Valley Lutheran (12-7 7-4 CWC North) in another regional quarterfinal. The winners face off in a regional semifinal March 1.
