State Boys Individual Tennis Championships Preview

THE MEET:  The 100th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 1-3 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and will resume at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

TICKET INFORMATION:  Ticket prices for the State Individual Tennis Tournament are $9 per day plus online fees, and they are available to be purchased on-line on the WIAA website through GoFan, the WIAA ticketing partner, at:  https://gofan.co/app/school/WIAAWI?activity=Tennis.

LAST YEAR:  Second-seeded Solomon Dunsirn of Neenah won the singles title in Division 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over fifth-seeded Ethan Bo of Middleton in the championship match. In Division 1 doubles play, the third-seeded tandem of Alex Deubel and Ben Brandel of Arrowhead defeated the four-seeded team of Jacob Baldwin and NIkko Vilwock of Sun Prairie 6-1, 6-2 in the bracket’s title match. Top-seeded Max Watchmaker of University School of Milwaukee won the Division 2 singles championship by defeating second-seeded Teddy Wong of Dominican/Eastbrook Academy 6-1, 6-2. Jack and Kyle Hehli of West Salem, the fifth-seeded doubles team in the Division 2 bracket, downed second-seeded Pranav Gogineni and Vibhu Guda of Brookfield Academy 6-1, 6-1 in the title match.

DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Junior Oscar Corwin of Brookfield East is the top seed in the bracket. He qualifies for the third year in a row. He has posted a 29-1 record after placing sixth at State last season. In 2021,  Corwin won his first two matches at State before bowing out to the eventual champion in the third round. Senior Nicholas Balthazor of De Pere is the #2 seed with an unblemished mark of 22-0 this season. Last season’s State runner-up, sophomore Ethan Bo of Middleton is seeded third in the bracket with a 19-2 record. Senior Sam Klein of Brookfield East is 25-1 this season, and he is the #4 seed in the bracket. He qualified in singles play last season and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. In 2021, he advanced to the third round in 2021. Junior  Surya Arvind of Brookfield Central is the #5 seed with a 21-4 mark this season. Arvind won three matches in the tournament last year prior to falling to the top seed in the bracket, and he advanced to the second round in 2021. Junior Koji Heineman of Middleton is seeded sixth with a 20-3 record. He didn’t qualify last season, but won two matches before being defeated in singles play in 2021. Senior Ethan Yu of Madison West is experiencing State for the third time. He is seeded seventh with a 16-6 record. Yu finished fourth at State a year ago, and after a bye in the first round in 2021, he fell in his second-round match-up. Sophomore Aiden Meixl of Kimberly is the eighth seed with a 24-3 record. Qualifying as a freshman last season, he lost in the first round. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 13 of the 21 singles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a fourth seed.

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  The senior tandem of  Alex Aranda and Henry Vizgaitis of Nicolet are the top  seed in the bracket with an undefeated 26-0 record this season. Both Aranda and Vizgaitis qualified with different partners last season and won their first-round match before falling in the second round. Aranda also won a first-round match with a different partner in 2021, and Vizgaitis qualified for singles play in 2021 and fell in his opening-round match.  Seniors Neel Mukherjee and Jonathan Kim of Middleton enter play as the second seed with a 17-1 record this year. Kim qualified for State the last season in the singles bracket and fell in the opening round last season after advancing to the second round at State in 2021. The brother tandem of senior Chatton Haws and sophomore Keenan Haws of Cedarburg form the #3 doubles team with a 27-1 record. Chatton advanced to the third round in single play at State the last two seasons, and Keenan qualified with a different partner and lost their match in the opening round. Seniors Lincoln Marshall and Daniel Egelhoff of Marquette have compiled a 7-1 record in limited matches this season. They have been issued the #4 seed. Marshall is half the combination that finished fifth in doubles at State last season, and he advanced to the third round with a different partner in 2021. Egelhoff qualified with a different partner in 2021 and lost in the first round. The fifth seed in the bracket is senior Nathan Rose and sophomore Alex Yan of Hamilton with a 12-2 record. Rose gained State experience last season with a different partner, winning their opening-round match before falling in the second round. Junior Grant Meyers and freshman Jake Zheng of Brookfield East qualify for State competition for the first time as the sixth seed with a 9-4 record. Junior Aaditya Tiwari and senior Gabe Weitzer of Brookfield Central are seeded #7 with a 17-8  record. Tiwari qualified for State in the singles bracket a year ago and won his first-round match before being ousted in the second round. The #8 seed in the bracket are juniors Jack Eisenbrown and Aidan Ferber of Marquette with an undefeated 12-0 record in limited matches. Ferber advanced to the third round with a different partner in 2022. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 12 of the 21 doubles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a fourth seed.

DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Senior Max Watchmaker of University School of Milwaukee, the defending State singles champion, is the top seed for the second year in a row. He has compiled a 17-2 record this season. Prior to winning the title last season, he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling out of championship contention in 2021. Junior Adrian Yin of Brookfield Academy is the #2 seed with a  19-2 record this season. He qualified last year, but defaulted in his second-round match after a first-round bye. He advanced to the championship match in 2021 and finished runner-up. Sophomore Kyle Hehli of West Salem is seeded third with an undefeated 24-0 mark. He is half the duo that won the doubles championship last season.  Sophomore Anderson Fortney of Aquinas is seeded fourth with a 24-4 record. He gained State experience in singles last season, falling in his first-round match. Junior Sonu Beeram of New Berlin Eisenhower has been issued the #5 seed, possessing a 20-7 mark. He won his first-round match at State last season before losing in the second-round. Junior Hayden Latus of Catholic Memorial is seeded sixth with a 16-5 tally. He won his first match in the State Tournament the last two seasons before falling from title contention in second round.

Junior Joshua Horak of Xavier sports a 17-5 record as the seventh seed in the bracket. He qualified last season but was unable to advance out of the first round. Sophomore Wesley Auth of St. Mary Catholic is the eighth seed with a record of 13-2. He finished fifth at State last season as a freshman. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 15 of the 21 singles titles during that span, and the lowest seed to win the championship since then was a sixth seed.

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  The #1 seed in the bracket is issued to juniors Nick Bittner and Nate Hall of Xavier with an undefeated 18-0 record. The duo placed fourth at State a year ago. Bittner also earned State experience in 2021 by qualifying with a different partner and winning a first-round match. Sophomores Miles Gourlay and Jack Gilpin of University School of Milwaukee is the #2 seed in the bracket with a  12-6 record. They are experiencing the State Tournament for the first time. The third-seeded doubles squad is senior Trent Adamson and junior Nate Carson of Catholic Memorial with a 9-4 record. The tandem placed sixth at State a year ago. Prior to that, Carson also placed sixth at State with a different partner in 2021. Junior Vibhu Guda and sophomore Sanjit Madireddi of Brookfield Academy is seeded fourth with a 10-6 record. Both qualified for State doubles play last season with different partners. Guda and his partner were seeded second and finished runner-up, and Madireddi and his partner were not seeded and fell in the first round. Senior Calvin Sharpe and sophomore Jonathan Orth of The Prairie School comprise the fifth-seeded duo with an 18-4 record. The duo moved on from the first round and was eliminated in the second round last season. In addition, Sharpe qualified in 2021 with a different partner that resulted in a loss in the first round. A pair of freshmen were issued the #6 seed. Gianni Frausto and Cavin Baltus of Plymouth qualify in their first season with a 20-5 record. Cousins Grant and Harry Bergstrom, a junior and sophomore, respectively, form the #7 seeded tandem with a 5-4 record. Grant gained State experience last season with a different partner and advanced to the fourth round before being eliminated from title contention. Senior Griffin Montes and sophomore Chaz Hoell of Kohler are the #8 seed with a 12-8 record, appearing at State for the first time. Since 2001, the top seed in the bracket has won 14 of the 21 doubles titles during that span, and an unseeded tandem has won the championship once during that span.
