MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – “Willow,” a newer addition to Wildwood Zoo’s exhibit, has sadly passed away.

“It is with the utmost sadness; the City of Marshfield Parks & Recreation Department announces the passing of Willow, the red fox, at Wildwood Zoo,” the department stated in a release. “She went in for a routine spay appointment and had a few complications during surgery, including a possible cancerous cyst on her uterus that was removed. She had a bit of a tough time coming out of the anesthesia but seemed to be recovering well in the following hours. Unfortunately, both her respiration and temperature plummeted suddenly and, despite immediate medical intervention, she was unable to be stabilized. The necropsy did not turn up any immediate reason that this happened but we are still awaiting a few test results.”

Willow’s spunk and her silly, sweet demeanor will be greatly missed. She came to the zoo earlier this year after being kept as a pet, making her an excellent ambassador for both her species and the importance of not keeping wild animals as pets. She bonded closely with her caretakers and enjoyed the time she spent with them. As a result of her social and intelligent demeanor, staff dedicated countless hours to her training in hopes she could continue public education through programs.

The loss of any animal is difficult but losing a young animal unexpectedly is always especially hard to make sense of.

“As always, the Parks and Recreation staff appreciates your continued support of Wildwood Park and Zoo,” they said.
