MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – It is with heavy hearts that the City of Marshfield Parks & Recreation Department today announced the passing of Thunder, the geriatric male cougar, at Wildwood Zoo. Thunder, who had been struggling with hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) in recent months, was humanely euthanized as a quality of life decision, following extensive deliberation by his veterinary team and zoo staff. He was nearly 16 years old, surpassing the average lifespan of male cougars under human care by several years.
Thunder had been a beloved resident of Wildwood Zoo since 2008, when he arrived alongside his sister, Star, who still resides at the zoo. Despite battling age-related ailments such as kidney disease and arthritis in his later years, Thunder brought joy to visitors and staff alike with his majestic appearance and gentle nature. His unmistakable purrs and chirps will be sorely missed, leaving a noticeable void in the zoo’s atmosphere.
In 2019, Thunder and Star transitioned to a new exhibit where they could often be found basking in the sunlight or engaging with enrichment items. Thunder’s passing leaves Star to adjust to life without her companion, but she will receive close attention and care from zoo staff during this transition period.
The City of Marshfield extended its gratitude to the Athens Veterinary Service team for their exceptional care of Thunder during his golden years, as well as to the dedicated zookeepers who ensured his comfort and well-being. The loss of Thunder is felt deeply by the entire community, emphasizing the special bond between animals and those who care for them.
