MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Thunder received a follow-up exam last week after his annual physical showed some abnormalities in kidney function and advancing arthritis, according to a statement from Wildwood Zoo.
“At almost 15 years old, neither of these diagnoses were unexpected. He had x-rays taken of his elbows and teeth after his root canal last year. Dr. Taylor also drew blood and was able to collect a urine sample,” they said.
After his last exam in June, Thunder’s diet and medications were adjusted, and zoo staff were pleased to find that a few of his elevated levels in bloodwork came down and his joint mobility improved slightly.
While neither kidney failure nor arthritis can be cured, staff are happy with the results of his exam and will continue to strive to keep Thunder comfortable.
“Thank you, Dr. Taylor and our zookeepers, for taking such excellent care of our golden guy!” the zoo stated.
