A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of northern Wisconsin from Monday morning to Monday night. Heavy snow is expected with accumulations of 6 – 10 inches and winds up to 35 MPH. Travel could be very difficult.
Patchy drizzle and areas of fog will continue across the area thru this evening. Then a mix of rain and snow is expected tonight, but exactly where the initial rain/snow line sets up is still uncertain. Regardless, any rain will transition over to snow throughout Monday morning, with snow likely to persist through the second half of the day. The highest amounts are expected across central and north- central Wisconsin where cooler air and snow arrives first. Snowfall amounts are still uncertain as models struggle with exactly where the heaviest band will setup. Current model trends bring up to 6-10 inches across portions of central to north-central WI. Lesser amounts are expected across the Fox Valley.
Hazardous travel is likely once the snow arrives. Monitor road conditions by visiting the Wisconsin DOT site: https://511wi.gov/
Snow tapers off Tuesday morning with generally quiet weather expected for the first days of the New Year.
Meanwhile, the combination of heavy rain, melting snow, and mild temperatures could cause flooding and ice jams along some rivers, especially in east-central and northeast portions of the state.
