CENTRAL WI, WI (OnFocus) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Green Bay has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Marathon, Portage, Waushara, and Wood counties, effective 6:00 AM Thursday, December 19, until 3:00 AM Friday, December 20. A fast-moving clipper system is predicted to bring the first widespread accumulating snowfall of the season, with total snow accumulations ranging from 5 to 8 inches across the region.

Areas near Lake Michigan could see even higher totals of 6 to 10 inches, due to lake-enhanced snowfall. Lesser amounts are expected in north-central Wisconsin.

Timing and Impacts

  • Snowfall begins: Early Thursday morning.
  • Heaviest snowfall: Thursday morning through the evening commute.
  • Travel impacts: Hazardous conditions are expected, making travel difficult, particularly during the morning and evening commutes on Thursday.

Residents are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips during the storm. Ensure vehicles are winter-ready, and keep emergency kits on hand if travel is unavoidable.
