Richard Suzuki, founding attorney of Suzuki Law Offices, commented:

“Lack of seatbelt use, dangerous terrain, wildlife crossings, and reckless driving are all factors that can contribute to fatal highway crashes. Fortunately, taking precautions like planning your trip, avoiding peak travel times, and staying alert can help keep you safe.

If you are involved in a car accident, it is crucial to contact the authorities, seek medical attention, and gather any necessary evidence for potential legal proceedings.

NHTSA: Highway fatality data, Federal Highway Administration: Traffic volume (miles driven on highways)

Methodology:

The most recent fatality data for 2022 was collected from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The total number of fatalities on highways and interstates in each state was compared to the number of yearly vehicle miles driven on highways in each respective state. This was done to account for the variance in how frequently residents in each state drive. The final ranking is based on the number of fatalities on highways in each state per billion vehicle miles driven.
