MADISON, WI (OnFocus) – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation rolled out a new-and-improved version of its 511 road conditions program this winter.

The service has always traditionally helped drivers locate bad stretches of highway conditions especially during winter when roads accumulate ice and snow.

The upgrades include the addition of triple the amount of roadways that were covered under the old system. Local highways like HWY 80 that runs near Pittsville and HWY 54 that goes through Pittsville and Wisconsin Rapids are examples of new roads that have been added to the system.

The upgrades have tripled coverage from 3,700 miles of roadway to over 14,000 miles. The 511 system uses technology that takes readings from key sources, including pavement temperatures, atmospheric conditions and snowplow maintenance activity.

Road conditions will also be updated twice an hour which is more often than the old system.
