1,156 votes were cast in the voting for the OnFocus Athlete of the Week, February 20 to February 26, an impressive number for sure.
Taking the top spot was a trio of athletes from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln: Preston Spray, Emmalee Boucher and Destinee Steinhafel, collecting 456 votes.
Mosinee’s Kate Fitzgerald took second place, with 299 votes.
Third place was awarded to Hannah Merkel of Marshfield, collecting 252 votes.
OnFocus Athlete of the Week, February 20 to February 26
- Luke Dux and Gunner Hoffmann, Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal Wrestling – Dux and Hoffmann claimed second place finishes Saturday evening at the WIAA State Wrestling Championships. Dux was second at 120 pounds and Hoffmann took second at 285.
- Hannah Merkel, Sophie Nikolay, Ellie Jensen, Marshfield Gymnastics: The trio of Tigers are headed to the WIAA State Gymnastics Meet after claiming top five finishes at sectionals. Merkel will compete in the balance beam and uneven bars after claiming a pair of third place finishes, Nikolay took fourth in the floor exercise, and Jensen was fifth on the balance beam.
- Kate Fitzgerald, Mosinee Girls Basketball – Fitzgerald had 22 points for Mosinee as the Indians advanced to the WIAA Girls Basketball Sectionals with a 54-30 win over New London. Mosinee will face Lakeland Saturday in a sectional semifinal, at Mosinee.
- Gavin Drexler and Raife Smart, Stratford Wrestling – Drexler and Smart came away with titles Saturday at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships. Drexler earned his title with an 11-1 win to claim the 138 pound title in Division 1. Drexler is a three-time state champ, earning the 138 pound title last year and 126 pound title in 2020. Smart won the 195 pound title with a 9-4 decision.
- Preston Spray/Emmalee Boucher, Destinee Steinhafel, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Wresting/Gymnastics – Spray capped off a 51-2 season with a 2-0 win to claim the Division 1 113 pound title Saturday evening. Boucher and Steinhafel qualified for the WIAA State Gymnastics Meet, held next weekend at Wisconsin Rapids. Boucher finished third on the vault and Steinhafel took fifth on the floor exercise.
