WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (OnFocus) – An early morning crisis involving an armed, suicidal individual was safely resolved thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department and supporting agencies.
At approximately 6:28 a.m. on Monday, April 14, the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department responded to an emergency call reporting a suicidal subject armed with a handgun in the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of Pine Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers swiftly established a perimeter and closed the affected block to traffic to ensure public safety. The individual, observed to be armed, was immediately engaged by officers in negotiations aimed at de-escalating the situation.
Given the close proximity of the incident to Woodside Elementary School, the school district was quickly notified. This prompt action allowed the district to take necessary precautions to protect students and staff.
The Wisconsin Rapids Department of Public Works also played a key role by closing additional streets in the area to facilitate the police response.
After nearly 90 minutes, at around 8:03 a.m., the individual voluntarily dropped the weapon and peacefully surrendered to authorities. No injuries were reported, and no charges have been filed at this time. The incident remains under investigation.
Chief of Police Daniel J. Hostens expressed his gratitude for the professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by all agencies involved.
“The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department thanks all responding officers, Public Works personnel, the Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department, and Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools for their cooperation and swift response,” said Chief Hostens.
This incident highlights the importance of rapid inter-agency collaboration and mental health crisis intervention in ensuring community safety.
