WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (OnFocus) – On July 19, 2024, Deputy Hoffmann and Deputy Matthews were assigned to work the Wisconsin State Water Ski Tournament at South Wood County Park.

According to the department, at approximately 4:55 p.m. Deputy Hoffmann was approached by a female who advised a 3 month-old infant was choking. Deputy Hoffmann ran to the location of the infant being held by a male individual.

The infant appeared to be conscious but unresponsive and not breathing. Deputy Hoffmann picked up the infant and administered life-saving measures. After a short time period, the infant began crying and was responsive. Deputy Hoffmann monitored the infant until paramedics arrived a short time later to provide further care.

Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker shared that all deputies undergo ongoing training to be able to provide CPR and other emergency life-saving techniques, which came into play on Saturday.
